Lance T. Laurence, Ph.D. was born and raised in Detroit, Michigan. He obtained a B.S. from Michigan State University in 1974 before completing his doctorate in Clinical Psychology at the University of Tennessee-Knoxville in 1980. He has been licensed to practice as a Clinical Psychologist continuously in Tennessee since January 1981. For three years he worked at the Regional Mental Health Center of Oak Ridge before starting his Knoxville practice on a full-time basis in September 1983. In addition to his clinical practice, Dr. Laurence has been an Associate Professor in the Department of Psychology at the University of Tennessee where he has been actively involved in the teaching and training of doctoral level students in Clinical Psychology. For decades he has taught doctoral courses in Clinical Psychology, Psychological Testing, Advanced Psychological Assessment, Peer Mentoring & Supervision , and a course on Ethical, Legal, and Professional Practice Issues in Clinical Psychology. For over fifteen years, he served as the Director of the Psychological Clinic at the University of Tennessee-Knoxville, overseeing the University’s training Clinic for doctoral students in Clinical Psychology.
Dr. Laurence has also been active in state and national psychology associations. For over two decades he served as the Legislative & Professional Affairs Officer of the Tennessee Psychological Association. He is a Past President of the Knox Area Psychological Association, the Tennessee Psychological Association and a Board Member of TPA on numerous occasions, serving in different roles. He served as Treasurer for psychology’s political action committee, T-CAP, for over twenty years. He is a member of KAPA, TPA, APA, and the National Academies of Practice. He has championed for psychology and those we serve in several public settings, including the Tennessee General Assembly and as a member of the White House Health Providers Review Committee under the Clinton administration.
Dr. Laurence is the recipient of several professional awards recognizing his contributions to psychology and the general public including an APA Presidential Award for Service, APA’s Karl F. Heiser Presidential Award, APA’s Practice Directorate Advocacy Award, twice awarded APA’s Division 31 Outstanding Psychologist Nationally, University of Tennessee Graduate Teaching Award, and multiple additional awards by the Tennessee Psychological Association.
